When reading the star I found it slightly boring because it took so long for anything to actually happen and it was already determined that it wasn't going to actually hit the earth. There was also no plans to try and prevent anything bad from happening which I found very interesting. In not having a rescue mission or one single hero I feel like the author was trying to unite humanity and show everyone on the same level as each other. In life there are some things that are inevitable and for the world this was one of them. Instead of separating a select few or just one from the rest of the world and raising them above he chose to unite everyone on the basis that this was something the world was going to have to face together. As much as I did not like this story I did like the messages of unity and togetherness of the world.
I found the story speech sounds very interesting. It showed the downfall of the world after communication was wiped out completely. The world became animalistic and almost primal as people were not able to communicate their true thoughts or wants because of a virus. It was an every man for himself type of world where a simple wrong movement could have caused a fight. The importance of communication and language is highlighted in the story and shows how important the spoken language is when dealing with all people. I thought at then end of the story when Rye found the children that were able to speak it created a glimmer of hope that one day the world would be able to be a place like it was before this virus hit. One of the lines that really hit me was when it was said that if a woman was raped no one would help her. This real demonstrated how afraid and how reserved people were to help others because of the possibility of being killed or causing another fight. The cop that still worse his uniform really intrigued me because even though no one else knew what it meant he did and he almost felt like it was his duty to protect and serve these people that did not want be served or helped. This also showed hope that people would still hold true to the old life they knew and would one day be able to bring those old ways into the new world they are building.
